WFAA Welsh Indoor Championship 2008 - Report
20th Jan

The Welsh & Open Indoor Championships was held at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff's Cycoed Campus on the north eastern edge of the Welsh capital. The decision to move to this venue proved to be a good one with plenty of space, a grandstand for spectators and the facilities of a bar and cafeteria. It was all change too amongst the competitors with many new faces and a good number of juniors and cubs competing in their first major tournament. Each year a large contingent of EFAA archers cross the bridge in pursuit of Welsh Open titles and they did not disappoint, with a large group coming from March Hare Archers. The WFAA's members were also very pleased to welcome back our friend Tony Knowler from Spye Park Archers. This year, we also welcomed a number of our friends from Drum Field Archers in Edinburgh, the first time for many years that Scottish archers have contested the Welsh Indoor Championships.

The story of the day was the Gents Unlimited group. The were no maximum scores but the Welsh Championship was decided on a single x after Geraint Thomas and Dave Home both finished on a score of 298. Dave took the title, outscoring Geriant by a single x. Bob Lloyd put in one of his career best performances to take the Veteran Gents Unlimited.

Chris Parry-Lloyd proved the value of a break when he won the Junior Male Unlimited division at his first tournament for more than a year.

Nigel Kent of Llantwit Major Archers proved why he has earned a place on the Wales development squad with a superb performance to take a well earned gold in the Adult Male Compound Sighted division and Pauline Ashall of Drum Field Archers put in a typically strong performance to take the ladies Compound Sighted Open title.

Michael Morgan of Llantwit Major Archers put in a new personal best to take the Junior Welsh Recurve Unsighted title with a confident performance to hold off Elliot Parry. Elliot having just moved up to juniors in the last three months put in a solid performance to take the silver medal.

Llantwit Major also took gold at the Junior Female Recurve Unsighted division as Sarah Wallington returned to tournament shooting after a twelve month break, putting in a solid score.

Meanwhile, Garfield Thomas of Spirit of the Greenman impressed at his first indoor tournament taking the Gents longbow title. Club mate Lyn Dickason completed a clean sweep by taking the Ladies longbow title.

The WFAA General Committee would like to extend our thanks to everyone who attended the tournament, with particular thanks to our friends from England and Scotland who had travelled long distances to compete in Wales. We would also like to thank those who administrated and marshalled the tournament with particular thanks to Cheryl Thomas, Kim Davies and Nigel Kent. Lastly, we would like to thank the staff of UWIC for your support and Blackrock Archery for sponsoring the tournament.
